Two years ago Debbie volunteered to help me with TNR program for MGCHS. After Debbie and I teamed up on the TNR program our collection of cats has escalated. Independent Cat Society

Westville, IN

The Independent Cat Society is a no-kill cat shelter in Westville, Indiana. We're conveniently located about one hour east of Chicago, 2.5 hours north of Indianapolis, and only 45-minutes west of South Bend, Indiana. Since we were founded in 1977, our goal has been to find homes for homeless cats in our community. Once each cat is spayed or neutered, we focus on adopting the cat into a safe, loving and lasting home. As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), the Independent Cat Society is funded almost entirely through membership, adoption fees, fundraising events, and the generous tax-deductible donations of caring individuals, like you. Although we have a small cleaning and medicating staff, we operate our shelter mainly with volunteers. We do not receive any government funding. Every cat admitted to our shelter is examined by a vet, is spayed or neutered, and is up-to-date on vaccines and necessary medical treatment. Our no-kill policy means we do not euthanize cats unless a veterinarian advises it to relieve suffering. Our Mission Our mission is to promote the welfare of all animals by working to: reduce pet overpopulation educate the public prevent cruelties to animals promote responsible pet ownership, and promote more humane legislation.

Jay County Animal Control

Portland, IN

The Jay County Animal Control is an open door, municipal facility committed to protecting animals from conditions harmful to their well being, and to protecting the citizens of the community from stray, unvaccinated, and dangerous animals. We strive to promote a harmonious atmosphere between the animals and the people of our community. Along with the stray animals we pick up, we take every domestic animal that comes to our door; young, old, sick, or injured. Although state and county laws require animals to be held a minimum of 5 days, we try to shelter some for months while we try to find them new homes. But more keep coming every day, and we can only house so many at a time. As a result, we must humanely euthanize those animals for which no homes can be found. We have one Animal Control Officer who covers the entire 384 square miles of Jay county.
