But most importantly, we save the lives of Akitas that would otherwise be euthanized in area shelters. All of our fostered Akitas are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and temperament evaluated prior to adoption. Potential adopters are screened carefully and thoroughly to ensure we have a perfect match between family and Akita. Our assistance doesn't stop at adoption, we offer support to our adoptive families throughout the lifetime of their Akita.

Cat Action Team
Charlottesville, VA
CAT advocates for and supports felines whose caretakers cannot provide for them, as well as for those cats living in counties with inadequate or non-existent low-cost clinics or shelters. By helping cats remain in place, our work reduces the numbers of cats brought into shelters who would otherwise be euthanized. All cats deserve to live in peace in their colonies with appropriate care. Trap, neuter, return (TNR) is the most effective and humane method of working towards this reduction and involves humanely trapping feral cats, neutering them and providing vaccines, and then returning them to their outdoor homes once they have recovered. In order to achieve this goal, we will: Work in partnership with local veterinary offices and clinics to have feral cats TNR'd so that cat colonies come as close to possible as 100% sterile. Aside from financial assistance, this includes transportation of cats and providing shelter to cats recovering after surgery Educate cat colony caretakers on TNR Provide assistance to colony caretakers with food and shelter as needed Make an effort to find caretakers for colonies who are without one Identify and bring outdoor kittens and non-feral cats into foster care for socialization and eventual adoption Keep a record of colonies in central Virginia so as to keep up with future support that might be needed Make annual estimates of reduction or remediation of colony sizes so as to estimate achievement towards our goal

Central Virginia Regional Rescue
Forest, VA
My name is Laura and I am the president of CVRR. For 5 years I was the dog coordinator and board member for the Humane Society for Campbell County, where we had one of the largest and most respected foster-care-based rescues in the region. I have been a veterinary technician for 15 years. I have also been a trainer and behaviorist for 10+ years. My volunteers and I pulled away from HSCC because of a varying value system and different long-term goals, to create an organization based on a totally volunteer-run administration where every dollar goes to the animals' care. Educational outreach is also of paramount importance. Rescue has been a huge part of my life and my family's life, and we love having the opportunity to not only help animals get a well-deserved second chance but also play a part in completing a family with a new furry addition. Many volunteers in the rescue world I have found are very much animal people, but I enjoy the human aspect nearly as much as the opportunity to advocate for animals.

Fancy Cats Rescue Team
Herndon, VA
Fancy Cats Rescue Team was founded to provide the community a "safety net" for cats and kittens that are abused and abandoned, or added to the euthanasia list at the shelters that we are currently participating with. We are a 501 (c) (3) Nonprofit Organization and participate with the United Way/CFC #8929. The goal is to have no kill shelters in place. Education and responsible pet ownership are the foundation of our organization. Our program provides literature, counseling, referral services and educational resources to families and individuals needing guidance. Teaching people responsible pet guardianship by spay and neutering their pets, behavioral modification and health concerns. We also provide a mentoring environment for our youth volunteers where they can learn the rewards of community service while caring for animals that need their gentle, loving kindness. They also interact with the community providing self-confidence and the ability to interact with a variety of cultures and diverse backgrounds. Once an animal is received into our program, they remain with us until a safe, appropriate home is found. They are never euthanized based on their age or space limitations. They are given appropriate medical care, immunizations, spays or neuters and endless hours of tender, loving care. We are an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff. We are funded by community donations, 91% goes toward the care and well being of our animals. Our adoption fees help offset our veterinary bills.

The Almost Home Pet Adoption Center is a no-kill facility owned and operated by the Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County. It is located at the intersection of Rt. 29 North and Stagebridge Road (Rt. 624) , just two miles north of Lovingston. Presently the facility is open daily from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. The Adoption Center houses dogs and cats. The dogs are contained in individual rooms, one or two to a room, with wall murals painted by area artists and hemi-sync music from a sound system donated by the Monroe Institute. Visitors are encouraged to spend time in the rooms getting acquainted with the dogs and cats prior to adoption. Cats and kittens are housed in colorful cat condos with handcrafted furniture for climbing and perching. Adoption fees cover the cost of vaccinations, worming, heartworm test or feline leukemia/aids test and spaying/neutering. All adult animals are provided these veterinary services prior to adoption. Kittens and puppies are adopted out with neutering certificates covering the cost of these veterinary services at the appropriate age. Many of the animals come from unclaimed or surrendered animals at the Nelson County Animal Control Facility. These animals have been judged to be adoptable based on temperament and looks. The Center does accept animals being surrendered by Nelson residents on a space available and adoptability basis. I am a volunteer. Among other things, I take photos of animals and post them on the internet for exposure to the public. Website: http://www.nelsonspca.org/index.htm
King Street Cats
Alexandria, VA
King Street Cats is proud to be the only cat-exclusive, no-kill rescue facility in Alexandria, Va. We are 100% volunteer-run and rely solely on private donations. Prior to 2003 we were known as The Albert Foundation. King Street Cats houses 30 cats on average and because we are free-roaming, you can come and hang out on the weekends with the "cat-friendliest cats" in town! Our mission is to provide loving homes for the cats and kittens in our care, and to educate and assist the community in regard to cat welfare. We accomplish this through outreach to the local community by providing information on proper cat care, behavioral problems and other issues involving cats. If you call or email us, we will respond! We also assist local residents in locating and retrieving lost cats and assist individuals through the cat adoption process. We promote spaying and neutering, and all our cats and kittens are sterilized and fully up-to-date on shots prior to adoption. We also provide post-adoption support for adopters and anyone else that needs cat care advice. Because we only work in the area of cat welfare…we know cats! We believe that every cat, regardless of age or personality, deserves to have a forever home and our cats stay with us until that home is found.
